There are several ways to combat global warming, but singer and rapper Pharrell Williams, along with a cognac brand, has come up with a new one.

Pharrell has composed a song that will only be released 100 years from now, in November 2117. It’s aptly titled 100 Years – The Song We’ll Only Hear If We Care. Because people will get to hear it only if mankind has managed to tackle global warming in the intervening years.

How does it work?

The only copy of the song has been engraved on a unique record made of clay from the Cognac region of France, and stored in a state-of-the art, customised safe that will automatically unlock in November 2117. The safe is indestructible, unless is submerged in water, in which case the record will disintegrate and the track will be lost forever.

Scientists have projected that if sea levels continue to rise at the current rate due to climate change, then in 100 years a portion of the world’s land may be underwater. Without adequate steps to reverse global warming, therefore, the safe may well be submerged by then.

The song was premiered during a private listening party in Shanghai on November 13, and presented one-time only to 100 guests, who, it is hoped, will motivate others to take action to curb global warming.

The cognac brand worked on a similar project in 2015, when they associated themselves with a film written by John Malkovich and directed by Robert Rodriguez, which will also be hidden for a century, for the same cause.
