A disturbing video has surfaced from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar (above) shows a man being abused, thrashed, and beaten with a slipper.

The assaulter, a moneylender or, more appropriately, loan shark who goes by the name Ranpal, has now been arrested and sent to jail after the video above, which he himself circulated among the rest of his “clients” – presumably to terrorise them – went viral online.

Two years ago, Sanjay Prajapati, a very poor potter who, according to NDTV.com, earns about Rs 5,000 every month for the upkeep of his five-member family, borrowed Rs 50,000 from Ranpal for his daughter’s wedding. When Prajapati was unable to pay Ranpal – who had charged an exorbitant rate of interest – the entire Rs 1 lakh that the moneylender claimed was due to him, the incident recorded in the video took place.

According to an interview Prajapati gave to ANI (video below), Ranpal’s offence didn’t end with the brutality seen in the video – he even ill-treated Prajapati’s wife and tore her clothes off. He had recorded the video to send a “warning” to his other clients, but it proved his undoing.
