Video: New footage of US bomb strike in Afghanistan shows the extent of destruction
After footage shot from the air, a closer view from the ground
When the US Air Force dropped the GBU-43 Massive Ordinance Air Blast bomb (MOAB) on Islamic State (IS) caves and tunnels in East Afghanistan on April 13, the aerial-view footage they released of the strike didn’t show what had happened on the ground.
Besides killing people, the bomb destroyed several buildings in Nangarhar province, as the new video above, shot by the Afghan police, shows.
According to Business Insider, the area was blocked by the security forces for more than a week after the blast.
In the new footage, the police force can be seen picking through a sea of rubble, hunting for weapons amidst demolished structures.
On April 14, a day after the strike, Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry confirmed that at least 36 IS militants were killed in the strike, although after a few days various news publications cited the number as 94.
