Forty days after demonetisation the situation on the ground is not any easier. Three out of four locks in India are made in Aligarh. And a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes would no longer be legal tender, 90% of factories in the area have shut down. In the coming days, it is likely that more will follow suit.

The video above by NewsClick.in records interviews with all the citizens affected by the closure of these factories. Ninety-eight per cent of the industry works only on cash. In a city of 10 lakh people, there is only one ATM in use. The policy has affected even the suppliers and raw material is in short supply.

“Modiji has only provided facilities for the wealthy,” one incensed worker says. “Can’t see what Modiji has done for the poor.”

“No food to eat,” says another. “That’s acche din, I guess.”
