Maybe instead of Pokémons, we should be trying to locate Syrian children instead. A clever new social media campaign is reminding us of just this, with images of the children holding up images of the toon figures to tell us to find them and take them away.

The Syrian civil war has been going on the for over five years now. Millions of inhabitants of the country have been displaced and been forced to leave their home country to seek their fortunes elsewhere. Thousands have perished at home and in perilous journeys while migrating. The situation doesn't look to get better any time soon.

On Tuesday, US-led airstrikes allegedly killed close to 73 civilians in northern Syria. UNICEF estimates that around 35,000 children have become trapped in the area following the airstrikes.

The video above is a short news report about the campaign.

Here's an interview with the graphic designer whose posts on Facebook were an inspiration for the project.

The campaign has taken root on Twitter as well, with pictures being shared of children with captions that read, "I am here, come save me." The photos below were posted by the media offices of the Revolutionary Forces of Syria.

A spokesperson for the Turkey-based group told The Independent, "With the media spread wide for Pokémon game we decided to publish these images to highlight the suffering of the Syrian people from the bombing of the forces of order and Air-Assad to the Syrian people and besiege them."
