It's light. It's malleable. And the humble cane is also perfect for artificial limbs.

Founded in October 2015 by robotics professional Arun Cherian, the Bengaluru-based start-up Rise Legs is making prosthetics using cane. The company recently showcased its products at the world's first Cybalathon, an Olympics for bionic athletes, and finished in the seventh and eight spots.

Cherian used to work in the US, developing and researching wearable exoskeletons for marines. Some of these were priced as high as Rs 80 lakh. The cane prosthetics cost around Rs 10,000.

The startup has also partnered with the Red Cross and MIT to further develop these prosthetics. Nearly 50 people have been fitted with them so far.
