Comedians have had a hard time reacting to the American election cycle. Normally it offers great fodder, since politicians of every stripe will always say silly thinks, make outrageous claims and can easily be caricatured. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has changed all of that.

Trump is hard to make fun of, simply because he seems so unhinged that it's difficult to joke about him. But he also has a very distinct speaking style, which lends itself to impressions, and everyone's tried, including the Dalai Lama.

Now American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, which found a pitch-perfect Sarah Palin in Tina Fey eight years ago, is trying its hand at the task. And it's got Alec Baldwin playing Trump, with staffer Kat McKinnon portraying Hillary Clinton.

“She’s battling pneumonia, we hope she is feeling better tonight, it’s secretary Hilary Clinton”, and “he’s the man to blame for the bottom half of all his kids’ faces, it’s Republican nominee Donald Trump” are how the two candidates are introduced in the Saturday Night Live version of the debate starring Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon.

Baldwin’ is pitch perfect as Donald Trump, “Our jobs are fleeing this country, they’re going to Mexico, they’re going to China.”

There were references to Trump’s frequent sniffs and the allegations that he had been given a faulty microphone, “My microphone is broken. She broke it with Obama. She and Obama stole my microphone. They took it to Kenya, and now its broken. Sniff”. Baldwin’s Trump continued, “I think she’s sniffing. She’s been sniffing all night.”

“Secretary Clinton, what do you think about that?”

“I think I am going to be President.”
