It is now widely accepted that Donald Trump’s acceptance speech was several shades terrifying. Trump’s candidacy has in the course of a year been transmogrified from a joke to a serious threat for many.

When Trump had announced his candidature for the Republican Party's candidature for President of the US, Jon Stewart was still hosting The Daily Show. A thrilled Stewart had thanked Trump for making his “last six weeks his best six weeks”, for the sheer number of jokes the move could generate.

Stewart returned as the calming voice of reason on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, following the Republican Party’s official nomination of Trump. He took over Colbert’s desk and launched into taking down Fox News and Trump (video above).

“Well the convention is over, I thought Donald Trump was going to speak. Ivanka said that he was going to come out, she said he was really compassionate and generous, but then this angry groundhog came out and he just vomited on everybody for an hour.”

Stewart traced the Fox News coverage of Trump’s candidacy, focussing on one “Lumpy”, and his explanations of Trump’s controversial statements, such as the one stating that Mexicans were rapists.

“The contortions many conservatives will now have to do to embrace Donald J Trump. A man who clearly embodies all the things that they have for years said that they have hated about Barack Obama.”

Stewart then pointed at how all the Fox News criticism of Obama, applied better to Trump – the most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president, divisive, authoritarian, a narcissist with no grip on reality, etc.

The Republican Party’s formal nomination of Trump was the subject of jokes across other shows too.

Trevor Noah, who took over The Daily Show from Stewart, took potshots at Trump's speech, pointing at Ted Cruz's speech, in which "not only did he not endorse Donald Trump, he endorsed everybody but Donald Trump."

Seth Meyers, on his show Late Night with Seth Meyers, pointed at, besides other things, the weird air kiss Trump blew at his running mate Mike Pence. "Don't tease us with an air kiss Donald, America deserves better."
