As this artist paints Vincent Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' on water, you simply cannot look away
It's called Ebru, one of the oldest Turkish art forms.
Making copies of the pantings of Vincent Van Gogh may be a cottage industry around the world. But even so, Ebru art is quite unique.
In the video above, 32-year old Turkish artist Garip Ay paints an interpretation of one of Van Gogh's most famous painting, The Starry Night – on water. Little brush strokes add colours. The surface shimmers and forms the ripples. It is impossible to look away. Maybe this is what being hypnotised must feel like.
After Ay is done, he thrusts his brush into the centre of the work, disturbing the beautiful painting. He isn't finished. In the beautifully edited sequence that follows, as the rhythm of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata builds in the background, the colours and patterns are rearranged to produce a portrait of Van Gogh himself.

Here's a video where Ay explains how he does what he does. In Ebru art, substances are added to make water more viscous and then patterns are formed on its surface. Once the design is complete, it is transferred to paper. As a result of this unique process, each design is unique.
