The Hulk might have been living in Kolkata but who knew that he's Bihari at heart? Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo, who plays the green Goliath in the Avengers films, tweeted as such on Sunday, claiming his roots aren't just in New York city.

Ruffalo's tweet is part of a campaign to boost the usage of renewable energy in Bihar, with the aim of becoming 100% powered through clean energy; hence the "100% Bihar" claim.

Earlier this month, Bihar became the first Indian state to produce a fully solar-powered village. With the help of Greenpeace and Centre for Environment and Energy Development, Dharnai in Jehanabad district saw the installation of a 100 kilowatt solar-powered micro grid, capable of providing electricity to more than 2,400 people living in the village. Besides providing electricity to 450 household and 50 commercial establishments, the power grid is also capable of using 30 kW power in running water pumps for irrigation purposes.

Though the idea of a fully solar-enabled state might be inspiring, actually implementing it is a challenging task on multiple fronts. One of the biggest challenges is acquiring land for such projects. To generate 1 MW of solar power could require 5 acres of land to spread photovoltaic cells and at times, farmers withdraw their support to lend their land for such infrastructure projects. In 2014, Essel infraprojects started buying lands for a 30 MW solar power plant in Mansa, Punjab but the project’s cost shot the sky when farmers raised their land price from 8-9 lakhs per acre to 25 lakhs per acre.

On January 11, 2011, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission to make India a global leader in solar energy by aiming to produce 20,000 MW by 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has endorsed this effort and scaled up targets five-fold, saying the country needs to be generating 100,000 MW by 2022, an aim that is more than ambitious and will be hard to achieve.

Until now, thanks to regulatory challenges, infrastructure issues and the usual delays, India hasn't come very far in its renewable energy efforts. But a few examples like Kochi airport set the benchmark in the growth of solar industry after it became the world’s first airport to entirely run on solar power. After seeing many trendsetters, Bihar’s aim to go 100% solar is promising and it’s been getting supported by many Bollywood actors and directors. In this video by CEED India, many known actors, directors along with locals in Bihar come in support for Bihar’s solar project with slogan “I am 100% Bihar”.
